Locking Through

I promised you pictures from our 4th of July trip locking through. The first one is our approach to the locks. Notice the bridge above the dam where we saw several logging trucks.

The next picture is as we were going in. There was no other traffic at the time so we and a small power boat were able to go right in.

The third picture is of us about 1/2 way down. It is 49 feet from Wheeler Lake to Lake Wilson. We had a bow line and a stern line around the bollard going down. I had to hold us off of the walls of the lock to keep the spreaders from hitting. Dad was in the stern and I was sitting by the mast.

The gate is opening. There was a little fishing boat right outside the gate. He got out of there fast as he had no way of knowing whether we were a small boat or a big barge coming out.

They keep opening. The lock master (a lady) sounded a blast.

The light is so bright but we enter Lake Wilson.

Later in the day after we had been to the other end of the lake, we decided we like our lake better so we started back. Except that there was a barge waiting to be locked through. He had to wait until the lock came down for him, he went in, locked up, and we had to wait until the lock came down for us. About 2 hours.

It was fun and awesome to watch the water come out of the lock. Before it does though, the lock master sounds what sounds a siren to warn people that the water will start coming.

Then we went into the lock.

Locking back up was harder. This time, the water was pushing us off of the wall and we had to hold the boat in on the bollard. I managed to lose the pole I thought I was going to have to use to hold us off. Thus not so many pictures as we were really busy. Dad has already bought another larger line for us to use if we lock through any other time.

And thus was our adventure!

Here are pictures of our lunch at Applebees when we took Grandpa and B for lunch for their birthdays. We had a good time with all of them there and then some of us played a little Blackjack back at the house before we had cake and ice-cream.

More Ramblings

Today is Monday and I get to stay home! We are having company for dinner tonight so I'll be getting ready for that but I can clean house, do laundry, and work on the retreat I am doing this weekend (prayers will be appreciated). Ship Captain and I are getting over colds so a day at home is much appreciated.

Work on the new campus is moving along quickly. In fact, the graders are about a month ahead of schedule. More money for the next things (sewers, lights, etc.) is needed more quickly. SC will be flying out on Friday for a day trip to do some fund raising. For him, it's a combination praise and pressure.

We may be starting a study in our home on Saturday nights again. SC is getting frustrated that people are not thinking about deeper things so that when they read The Da Vinci Code, they don't think it's a big deal. So I am reading it to be able to discuss it more intelligently. Also one of the men in the church has been defending the New Perspectives on Paul, so we will probably get into that also.

After looking around at other churches, Alto Boy, (remember he lived with us during the summer of 2003) has decided to join our church. He will be included in the study and is already talking about how he can use his gifts.

Tomorrow night we are having Digger (who is more than welcome to change this name if he chooses) and Sundust over for dinner. Yesterday was Digger's birthday so we will celebrate it with them then. I'm even going to try a new recipe!

I shall close for now with more ramblings later.

Getting Ready

In two more days, we leave for Niagara Falls so Dad has been checking the weather even more than usual. At one point he was saying that with the wind chill it could be as high as 2 degrees! And now they are talking about snow showers. So we are packing our warmest things, and we are glad that our room overlooks the falls in case it's too cold to be out for long.

But he also has found that while we are there, there will be fireworks over the falls. And an ice wine festival. Apparently there is a certain type of grape that is picked when the temperature is at -8C degrees. There is an ice bar, a bar like you sit at made of carved ice. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be bringing back any samples. As you can imagine, the wine is very expensive. Anyway, when we get back, I hope to have some good pictures for you.

I am also getting ready to speak at our women's retreat in early February. I was just asked to do it last week but the ideas have been flowing pretty well so I think I'll be ready. The overall subject is about being rooted in Christ. Our church is so much into head knowledge that the direction I'm going to be going is very much application oriented. We'll remember and reflect on what God did last year in our lives. We'll think about what we are doing now with the idea of prioritizing and planning for what God would have us do this coming year. I'm hoping to get them to think about everything - how they are as wives, mothers, workers; what they do such as homeschooling, Bible studies, working out at the gym, hobbies, television, reading, fixing meals, etc. There will be some group time but also some alone time, which is important. We'll see. And of course, very important is to laugh together. It's going to be at a very pretty place on a lake so that should be inspirational.

So more when we get back from Niagara Falls!
